Escorting often frail passengers from their home onto the bus and ensuring their safety and comfort throughout the journey.
On each trip are two passenger assistants and we need more people to fill this vital and rewarding role. Passenger assistants help passengers on and off the bus, and to fasten their seat belts. There is no lifting and handling, although you do need to be able to push a wheelchair as one or two of our passengers use them. More passengers use walkers and sticks. The role is very sociable and you find yourself becoming part of a new social group. You do not have to go out more than once a month but many PAs do. It is very rewarding work because you can see and hear how much the passengers enjoy and appreciate their trips on Bertie.

About Bertie Bus
Bertie Bus exists to help relieve social isolation and loneliness of senior citizens who are virtually housebound as a result of age-related frailties and who are as a result unable to independently socialise outside their home environment. We achieve our objective by providing a specially constructed minibus with a tail lift and the facility to transport wheelchairs. The bus is used to offer door to door transport supported by Passenger Assistants to groups of eligible passengers to various destinations offering the ability to socialise.
